Six months before her quinceañera, we met Jayden at Mandalay Canal at Las Colinas for her formal gown preshoot — the editorial session every quince deserves before the main event. A bright early-November afternoon, 2 PM sun cutting through Mediterranean sandstone arcades, and Jayden in the black and gold ballgown she'd carry all the way to Luxor Banquet Hall in Carrollton for the main night. This is the session that bridges the Save the Date's personality shoot and the quinceañera itself — formal, polished, and unmistakably bold.

The Gown

The centerpiece of every formal preshoot is the gown, and Jayden's is a showpiece. A deep black sequin ballgown with an off-shoulder sweetheart bodice, intricate gold embroidery climbing through scrolling baroque patterns across the corseted top, and a sprawling tulle skirt covered in dimensional gold appliqués that catch every ray of afternoon light. The color is rich, true black — the kind that photographs cinematic against warm sandstone backdrops. A regal black crystal crown topped the look, paired with a black beaded statement necklace and matching jewelry that caught light at every angle.

Then, the detail that makes this gown unforgettable: a custom bouquet of black satin roses, accented with gold and pearl floral hardware, hand-built to match the gown stitch-for-stitch. Black-and-gold is one of the boldest non-traditional palettes a quince can choose, and it's a styling we keep seeing DFW quince moms request when their daughters want a look that reads confident, fierce, and unmistakably Texas-glam — striking on the day, and stunning in every frame of the preshoot.

The Location

Mandalay Canal at Las Colinas in Irving (220 East Las Colinas Boulevard, Irving, TX 75039) is one of the best-kept photo location secrets in DFW — and it's at its best at 2 PM, when the late-autumn sun cuts hard angles through the Mediterranean arcades. Venetian-inspired canal, sandstone columns, balconied courtyards, wrought iron lanterns, cobblestone walkways, and a grand staircase that descends to the gondola dock — every fifty feet gives you a different setting. Pedestrian streets, covered colonnades, archways framing the Las Colinas skyline, intimate alleys with hanging lights.

For Jayden's session we worked the Mandalay Place pedestrian streets, the canal-side grand staircase, and the long covered arcade where afternoon sun and deep shadow alternate in dramatic bands. The corridor is publicly accessible, pedestrian-friendly, and the 2 PM timing turns the arcade into a natural light box — direct sun for the hero frames, deep editorial shadow for the chiaroscuro portraits, all without leaving the same architectural setting.

Formal Portraits

A formal preshoot has a different job than a Save the Date. It's not about personality — it's about the archive. These are the framed-on-the-wall images, the signed prints for family, the photos that define what Jayden looked like on the edge of her fifteenth year. We shot wide environmental portraits against the historic architecture, editorial flat-lays with the gown splayed as its own backdrop, and intimate close-ups of every detail that took months to pull together.

The New Dawn approach to formal quinceañera portraits leans editorial over traditional. Dramatic angles. Negative space. Long frames that let the gown breathe. And the kind of attention to light that only comes from shooting DFW quinces full-time.

The Details

A formal preshoot is where every detail that took months to pull together finally gets its frame. The black crystal crown, with its tall pointed peaks catching the sun. The black beaded statement necklace, draping perfectly into the off-shoulder neckline. The custom black satin rose bouquet, with gold and pearl floral accents that mirror the embroidery on the gown. The dimensional gold beadwork tracing baroque patterns across the corseted bodice. Every piece was chosen to work with every other piece — and the preshoot is where all of it gets photographed in the kind of detail that rewards a closer look.

What’s Next

Six months after this Mandalay Canal preshoot, Jayden walks into Luxor Banquet Hall in Carrollton on November 8, 2025 for her quinceañera itself — the black-and-gold reception, the entrada, the vals, DJ Maxtor on the decks, the full production. The preshoot is the quiet, editorial chapter. The event is everything.

New Dawn Photo is a Dallas-Fort Worth quinceañera photographer and videographer serving families across Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Frisco, Plano, Irving, McKinney, Carrollton, and the entire DFW metroplex. Formal preshoots at Mandalay Canal in Las Colinas are one of our most-requested DFW quinceañera sessions — the combination of Mediterranean architecture and quinceañera formal gown photography is hard to beat.
